Cave Art Paintings
We started the year off by looking at
some of the earliest works of art, found
in caves in France, especially the
famous Lascaux cave. As we looked at
some close-up photos of the actual cave paintings, we discussed what types of
materials these early artists might have used to create the paintings
(charcoal, ground rock, plant and herb powders, etc), as well as the use of line, shape and
patterns in their art.
Our cave art project was to create a painting using natural “paints” which we
created from ground charcoal, tumeric, cinnamon and dry green plant powder
mixed with water.
Students crumpled brown paper to create a
cave wall-like
surface, drew a simple drawing and
painted with our natural paints. We
found that it's much harder than it looks!
