Continuing on with our art history lessons, we looked at art from ancient Greece, specifically paintings on some amazing Greek vases.

Our project was to make a vase out of paper mache.  We started with a balloon, bowl and cup to make the base, and then began the process of putting layer upon layer of newspaper strips and paste.  It's ooey, gooey, and deliciously messy.

After our vases dried, we painted them with acrylic paints.

 Hooray for paper mache!

Weaving
Using primary colors, students practiced mixing colors to make secondary colors.  They also experimented with warm and cool colors, and complimentary colors to see what colors they liked together.  After looking at Kandinski's Squares with Concentric Circles, students painted plates to make their looms.

Next students made a warp out of yarn on the plate.  This is where we start weaving, and the real fun begins!

Beautiful!  And oh, so fun!

Aboriginal Dot Art

Third and fourth graders had recently learned about Australian culture and history, so we looked at some Aboriginal art and decided to try traditional Aboriginal dot painting.
